84th Fighter Squadron

"Eileen"


1st Lt. Frank E. Oiler served with the 78th Fighter Group, 84th Squadron from 6-26-44 to 3-28-45. He was assigned as " F Flight " Commanding Officer on 2-22-45. Prior to the Group transition to P-51s in late 1944, Frank Oiler was assigned two P-47s coded, WZ-S. Both of these aircraft were named " Eileen" and displayed nose art considered by many as one the most colorful in the 78th.

After the 78th Fighter Group transition from P-47 to P-51 aircraft in late 1944, Lt. Frank Oiler was assigned P-51D, WZ-S, s/n, which was named "Sherman was Right". For more information and pictures of this aircraft see 84th Fighter Squadron, Sherman was Right".
