84th Fighter Squadron - 1943 Picture Gallery

#1 - The 84th Fighter Squadron: June 3, 1943; This picture was taken on the Duxford Parade Grounds in front of the Red Cross Aero Club. The pilots are in full dress uniform ("Pinks and Greens"). The formal occasion was the visit of British Secretary of Air, Archibald Sinclair, along with USAAF Generals Eaker, Hunter and Longfellow for the first presentation Purple Hearts, Air Medals, etc. to the 78th Fighter Group. Standing( left to right ) are unk., James Casey, unk., Charles Keppler, George Hays, John Irvin, Jack Price, Eugene Roberts( Squadron CO ), George Hartman, unk., Glenn Koontz, Paul Saffold, Harold Stump, Norbert Lentz. #3 - 84th Fighter Squadron - 1943 Scoreboard. Who is this proud Captain? ( Picture Source: Jerry Warstler collection )

#4 - 78th Fighter Group P-47C at Duxford Airdrome. The yellow bordered national insignia suggests the time frame taken was during the Spring/Summer of 1943. The last letter of the fuselage code appears to be an "L". Note that a portion of a blister hangar can be seen between the cockpit and vertical stabilizer.
