the California ANG until 54 then onto the greatest airplane ever
devised the F-86.

I just retired from the Air Force in Aug 01 but really appreciate all
of you that gave so much so that today's generations do not face the
same situations that you had to endure for freedom's sake. SALUTE and
Best of Health to all who served.

the war

thought you would all like to know that Steve Gray owner of the fighter
collection at IWM Duxford has brought a new P51D which has a history
with the 78th.

The aircraft is old HL-W 'Twilight Tear' from the 83rd FS.

Hi! Great web site !!!!! I was too young for WW 2 ..... I was in
the 84th FIS at Hamilton AFB, CA from 1958 to 1962. We flew the
F-89J Scorpian, and had two Genie nukes on one hour alert, with heat
seekers and radar guided GAR's on five minute alert. Later switched to
the F-101B, Voodoo. I was a backseater, a RIO, and it was the best
assignment of my 33-yr military career. FYI, we ran head-on snapups in
the F-89J, and quartering frontal attacks in the F-101B, against T-33
targets, and Sac bombers as part of Air Defense Command/Norad
exercizes. In those days, the skies were covered with contrails
as they merged in a peacetime intercept scenario, while preparing to
shoot down any enemy bombers that entered our airspace. I admire all
of you who ended the reign of terror in Europe and Asia, just as I
admire the men and women who protected us in Kuiwait and in Afganistan.
It would be nice to visit Duxford one day, and see the museum!

Enjoying your site,Have emailed Bill Blystone since he was stationed at
Atcham nr Shrewsbury, Shropshire and i live just a few mile away,
although i was very young in WW11, i still have a few memories of one
or two planes hitting the Wrekin hill,(the bits of which are still
found to this day) a flashing red beacon was soon errected after these
crashes to help stop this,it was dimantled some years after the war
despite efforts to save it, come the year 2,000, a brand new one was
fixed up with grear jubilation from the local population, although it
may not be quite as bright as the original one, at least we now have
the beacon again which also serves as a memorial to all of the airmen
who were at Atcham,
Trevor Bagley, Ironbridge, Shrops.

Really enjoyed your site, glad to see the memories being kept alive.
With so many of those who lived through the war passing on, will the
next generations get to know the little stories that make up the big
picture? I hope so.
Please call by my site: http://www.wartimememories.co.uk

It goes a little way towards recording the tales which will
otherwise be forgotton in years to come.

I was a waist gunner in a B-17 of the 15th Air Force and am wondering
if anyone knows which P-51 squad (possibly the 52nd) escorted the 15th
out of Foggia, Italy in 1944. The P-51s had a yellow tail, possibly
with black to form a checkered pattern. Me and my surviving crew mates
owe our lives to one of those pilots for a flight over Blechhammer,
Germany Oct. 13, 1944. Friday the 13th. Thank You.

William P. Blystone   06/Mar/2001:19:45:31
When signing the guestbook my name was entered as Blyston. Just wanted
to set the record straight. It's Blystone and I was a good friend of
Howard Wagner who also served in the 82nd Fighter Squadron- We enlisted
together in December of 1941, went to mechanics school at Keesler field
, Mississippi and then to factory school at the Lockheed plant in
Burbank,CA before joining the 82nd at the Naval Airstation, San Diego.
Howard died in early 2000. We were friends to the end.

william P. Blyston   06/Mar/2001:19:35:26
I was a member and crew chief of the 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th fighter
Group from early 1942 at Naval Airstation,San Diego, CA until early 1943
when we lost our P-38s to North Africa. I went overseas with unit in
November , 1942 on the Queen Elizabeth. After losing our P-38s
I was assigned to a Fighter training squadron at Atcham airfield nr.
Shrewsbury in England where our mission was to train pilots in the P47.
Some of our students were RAF pilots transferring to the American
airforce- they had previously been flying Spitfires and Hurricanes. Most
went to the 4th Fighter group after their P47 training.
I ended up as a member of the 357th Fighter Group, 362nd Fighter
Squadron at Leiston England crewing P51 Mustangs and served with them
until March of 1946 with my last station being Neubiberg, Germany nr
Munich.
Both the 78th and the 357th Fighter Groups were excellent units and I'm
proud to have served in both of them.

respect the people who was on it.Thak you for keeping the younger
generation informed and keeping history alive.

I was delighted to find a site that covered the historic aspect of
Duxford, and done so excellently. Just about all the others feature
this airfield as a museum and not as a thriving, buzzing service
airfield which it was.

Do any of the old flyers remember the garage and cafe just outside on
the Royston to Newmarket Road? When I was stationed there for nearly
three years in the fifties the place was still adorned with photographs
of 78th's Thunderbolts and it must have been a popular off-duty
rendezvous for pilots and groundcrews alike.
I wonder what happened to those pictures....they would be a priceless
historic record if they had been saved. Perhaps they are in the
possession of someone locally. They also operated a taxi service from
there in my time at least. I remember the perforated steel plate which
was laid onto the grass during WWII in order to form a more solid base
for heavier aircraft like the P47.

Just as a matter of interest, the website photograph depicting Duxfor

Great Site! Ran across this by accident while looking up my fathers
genealogy. I have mission records (very interesting reading) from
5/1/44 through 9/3/44 for my father's group and I recognized a number
of names in his flight group from the P47 message group and also the
78th web page...some of which show the MIA's last mission from my Dad's
perspective. My father was 2nd Lt. William John Luckey and I have
pictures of him in his plane "Mr. Luckey". Please email me @
kmcwilliams@ga.prestige.net if you/family recognize the name. I will
publish another message w/ the surnames in his group shortly so you can
search and will be glad to scan any mission records you would like to
see.

Sincerely, Kathy

From one old Jock to many others. I am Founder/President of 18th Fighter

wish we could have had Jugs to carry us through that war.

I did have the oppotunity to fly a war-weary razorback over the hump
from India to China in Nov '45, and learned to love it ... even the old
wrecks. (I described that flight in the "Diffenbaugh Project" of the
